Meet our grantees

In 2020, we gave out small grants to community based projects in London to help make their ideas become a reality! We wanted to help individuals and local organisations create, deliver and expand projects which improved community engagement.

After hundreds of applications, we are thrilled to announce we have awarded the grants. Check out the projects and individuals we are supporting below.

1000 black boys

1000 Black Boys is committed to inspiring young black men to discover their purpose. The project organises events with inspiring guest speakers, giving organisations that work with young people a platform to both inspire future generations and to showcase the great work they are already doing.

Get Hench provides self-development and transformative learning programmes for entrepreneurs, sports people and young adults. During their 8 week, 6 week and 1 day impact sessions, either on a one-to-one basis or in a group setting, they are upskilling young people in businesses and schools nationwide.

Redborder ltd

Redboarder offers courses to educate young people about entrepreneurship and future career opportunities. By embracing their skills and ambitions, Redboarder uses intergenerational and intercultural workshops to share knowledge and creativity. Young people involved in this pilot will have the opportunity to return as tutors in the next stages of the project.

Head held high

Head Held High offers unique, interactive and highly motivational workshops. The project ran a six-week online course helping individuals grow in confidence through drama and stand up comedy.

Aviard inspires

The project runs Digital Empowerment Webinars, the purpose of which are to have open and frank conversations with young people about the consequences of negative lifestyle choices, while also empowering aspirational thoughts.

Uplift the next generation

The main purpose of the project is to develop self-esteem and confidence in young people aged 14-19 who come from low socio-economic backgrounds in Bexley by running a series of webinars.

Sharp Raiser is providing online writing workshops for Somali refugee children.

elevation plus

Elevation Plus provides extra curriculum activities for young people from the ages of 6-18 years old. The main activities provided are English and Maths tuition as well as tailored fitness programmes. At the heart of this project is the commitment of elevation and building each child's confidence and ability, doing so by closely tracking each individual's progress and tailoring each session to suit their needs.

in your corner

In Your Corner was set up in 2016 to improve emotional wellbeing in young people aged 11-17 who are experiencing difficulties with their emotions and behaviour, but whom clinic-based wellbeing services consider “hard to engage”. They provide non-contact boxing sessions.

The recordshop

The RecordShop began as a pop-up recording studio programme to enable disadvantaged youths to access music making facilities. Fulfilling this social mission, The RecShop Online Mentoring Academy provides tailored 1:2:1 online music sessions designed to fulfil goals and reach targets set out by participants. The programme offers youths the opportunity to make music from home, using their phones, notepads and laptops led by The RecShop founder, award-winning Entrepreneur and Musician, Mary Otumahana aka rap artist, WondRWomN.

Pro Touch SA has been set up to help, support and encourage potential young, gifted and talented football players. The project runs online multi-sports and fitness active sessions via Zoom and Facebook Live.

urban mental health awareness

UMHA wants to bring established and up-and-coming entertainers together to collaborate and help raise awareness of the issue of youth violence many communities are currently facing. The project aim is to create a documentary about mental health illness and music in the urban culture, featuring young talent from low income areas of London.

An award winning charity empowering young people through projects that UNITE communities, EDUCATE on social issues, INSPIRE a generation of leaders and CREATE active citizens. They have launched a Community Reporters programme, supporting young people to report on positive local lockdown stories while gaining journalistic and media skills.

A project making a local boxing hero into a comic book character through workshops with local young people by producing two comics which underline the dangers of gang activity and are an inspiration for more young people to be a role model in their community.

The project aims to empower and help give young people the opportunities they might not normally have and access to a creative space. Youth Futures hosts a youth-led podcast.

Through community dance and well-being services, the project aims to inspire young people to enjoy and learn dance as a way to improve physical and mental health, build confidence/self-esteem and develop other life skills.

The purpose of the project is to educate and engage youth on the reality faced in schools across the country by providing workshops and an online toolkit full of resources and information to equip pupils on the crisis and empower them to become young activists.

The project aim is to produce digital resources focusing on body image and confidence including webinars, online video interviews and a body image care-pack.

Restorative Justice for All International Institute

Young people involved in this project strongly believe that however much money is thrown by government, trusts and donors for new policies, good schooling, textbooks, volunteering programmes, improved parenting or even affirmative action schemes, it won't help address inequality and stigma, if elitism and disadvantaged thinking are not eradicated amongst adults, decision makers and those in power. The project focuses on promoting Fairness, Respect, Equality and Dignity (FRED) as key values that impact on young people with an emphasis on those with mental health challenges.

Drillosophy is an educational video series which uses contemporary music and youth culture as a gateway into critical thinking. It is a collaboration between RoadWorks and the YouTube channel, Mixtape Madness, Each episode is accompanied by a free resource and PDF facilitation guide for teachers, youth workers and mentors, allowing for meaningful conversations to take place between adult educators and young people remotely.

Sir Hubert von Herkomer Arts Foundation

A 12- week programme designed to support 30 young people by supporting them with photography, filming and editing in a documentary style project.

The project is run by a team of bereaved parents and concerned people in the community who wish to help victims of knife crime and their families to access the right support.

The aim of the project is to train over 100 youth practitioners for free in Mental Health First Aid and other related courses.

Say it with your chest

Say It With Your Chest is a social enterprise which successfully lowers the rate of exclusions in schools whilst improving students' attendance, resilience, self-esteem, confidence and well-being. They do this by delivering tailored workshops and mentoring sessions which take into consideration the individual needs of students.
